The Journey from Geologist to CEO: Alberto Orozco’s Transformation through Stanford LEAD

Discovering a Passion for Geology

Early in his career, Alberto Orozco immersed himself in the world of geology in his native Mexico, working for mining companies. He was captivated by both the science of geology and the artistry involved in mapping landscapes. “Geology has an art component, mapping the landscape and interpreting information,” Alberto reflects. His excitement mirrored that of an explorer, akin to Indiana Jones, indulging in the historical narratives embedded into the billions of years of geologic time.

A Shift Towards Leadership

In 2014, Alberto transitioned to a business development role as a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and sustainability advisor for a mineral exploration company. This new position required a different skill set—one that encompassed business strategy, management, and effective communication. “I was no longer talking to geologists about rocks and reserves, but representing mining projects to politicians and communities,” he explains. Faced with this new challenge, he realized he lacked the necessary skills to navigate this complex landscape.

Seeking Knowledge and Growth

Recognizing the necessity for professional development, Alberto sought programs that could enhance his capability to lead. In 2015, the Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB) launched its LEAD Online Business Program. This year-long program was designed to empower leaders with essential skills, facilitating both personal and professional growth. Alberto was thrilled at the opportunity. “LEAD checked all the boxes,” he notes. It allowed him to learn from the convenience of his home in Mexico while also accommodating his business travel.

Real-World Applications

The program’s curriculum expertly combines research-based frameworks with hands-on learning experiences. Courses in leadership, finance, and critical thinking were critical for his transformation. “I started applying my learnings while still in the program,” he recounts. Despite being what he defines as an introvert, Alberto found himself pushed out of his comfort zone.

An assignment that stands out to him involved negotiating a price at a department store—an exercise crafted to stretch his negotiation skills. “That was incredibly difficult for me to do,” he shares. “But it really pushed me into an area where I didn’t know I could perform.” Small steps, as he learned, often lead to significant changes.

Building Leadership Competencies

The LEAD program proved invaluable as it offered courses specifically tailored to developing crucial leadership skills. Modules like Building Power to Lead, Negotiating and Collaborative Problem-Solving, and Power of Story significantly boosted his capacity to influence his organization. “The program helped me take my career where I wanted to go,” Alberto reveals, transitioning away from being seen merely as a technical expert to a leader destined for the C-suite.

Networking for Success

Beyond the knowledge gained, Alberto forged connections with fellow cohort members, an experience that extended well beyond the program’s duration. “Whenever I travel, I try to connect with someone from the LEAD community,” he mentions. As the LEAD network continues to grow, he finds value in these relationships, emphasizing their importance in fostering collaborative opportunities.

Advancing in the Mining Industry

After completing LEAD, Alberto climbed the corporate ladder in North American mining exploration companies, eventually becoming a director and then vice president. Within this trajectory, he advocated for sustainable mining practices and embraced corporate affairs. The skills and insights he acquired from LEAD directly influenced his career progression. “It’s been a great return on my time and investment,” he asserts.

Leading Capitan Silver Corp.

By 2020, Alberto had ascended to the positions of director and CEO of Capitan Silver Corp, a Canadian mining exploration company. He now plays a pivotal role in advocating for sustainable practices within his industry, engaging with community leaders, and ensuring compliance with environmental standards. His LEAD experience not only prepared him for this role but also provided a foundational platform for ongoing growth as an industry leader.

A Commitment to Positive Change

Reflecting on his journey, Alberto recognizes that LEAD was instrumental in helping him discover skills and attributes he didn’t know he had. “It pushed me to do things I otherwise wouldn’t have done,” he emphasizes. His commitment to leveraging the mining industry as a force for positive change remains steadfast—fueled by the innovative potential he sees in the sector.

The Transformative Impact of LEAD

Looking back over ten years, Alberto acknowledges the profound effect LEAD has had on his career trajectory. “The program taught me I needed to network, find investors, promote our company, and put our mission out there in the world,” he concludes. The transformative nature of LEAD has proven to be an unparalleled experience in his professional journey, reinforcing the critical role of continuous learning and adaptation in achieving success.
