La Trobe University Launches Exciting New Initiative for Entrepreneurs

La Trobe University has recently made headlines by securing a $400,000 grant from LaunchVic, Victoria’s dedicated startup agency. This funding aims to establish a dynamic program designed to empower early-stage entrepreneurs in transforming visionary ideas into tangible business ventures. This initiative underscores the importance of fostering innovation and entrepreneurship as catalysts for Australia’s economic growth and prosperity.

Supporting Future Entrepreneurs

The grant recognizes La Trobe University’s commitment and success in launching various entrepreneurship programs in recent years. Vice-Chancellor Professor Theo Farrell emphasized the vital role that universities play in nurturing the next wave of entrepreneurs. He pointed out that the LaunchPad initiative is specifically tailored to equip aspiring founders—drawn from student, alumni, and community networks—with essential tools, valuable connections, and the confidence needed to turn innovative ideas into successful enterprises.

“Through initiatives like LaunchPad, we are equipping aspiring founders from our student, alumni, and community networks with the tools, networks, and confidence to turn innovative ideas into real-world success,” stated Professor Farrell.

The LaunchPad program promises to enhance La Trobe’s ability to deliver impactful research and innovation that tackles challenges faced by businesses, thereby improving productivity and driving future economic growth in Australia.

Overview of LaunchPad Program

LaunchPad is set to be a transformative 12-week Pre-Accelerator Program aimed at emerging entrepreneurs with technology-led startup concepts. The Victorian government’s funding will support two annual program intakes for the years 2026 and 2027, following an initial pilot set to commence in September this year.

This program represents a proactive move to cultivate innovation within the university and, by extension, the local community.

Collaborations and Course Structure

In collaboration with Startmate, Australia’s oldest and largest accelerator, La Trobe University will deliver an initial eight-week course. This program will aid young entrepreneurs in identifying customer bases, developing, and testing their minimum viable products, as well as igniting their journey as founders.

To keep the momentum alive post-initial program, LaunchPad Plus will provide a four-week extension. Taught by La Trobe University experts and academic leaders, this extension will focus on further refining business models, team formation, and the launch of initial ventures.

For over a decade, La Trobe has effectively engaged with local businesses, students, and global partners—most notably in India—through its innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives. The LaunchPad program builds upon this rich legacy.

The Importance of the Startup Ecosystem

According to Dr. Kate Cornick, Chief Executive Officer of LaunchVic, Victoria is a hotbed for startups, accounting for over 50% of Australia’s startups in sectors such as Enterprise Software and Healthtech. Furthermore, it boasts a third of the nation’s Fintech startups.

“With around 180 university spinouts contributing $2.9 billion in value, programs like the La Trobe LaunchPad will be critical for Victoria’s fast-growing startup ecosystem,” explained Dr. Cornick.

Application Process

For those interested in participating, applications for the La Trobe LaunchPad pilot program are currently open until Thursday, August 7. The program invites La Trobe undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate students, as well as academic and research staff and alumni, to apply.

This initiative marks a significant step forward in connecting education with entrepreneurship, providing a structured pathway for innovative minds to thrive and contributing to the wider startup community in Victoria and beyond.
