Forward-Thinking Entrepreneurs at Coventry University Score Big with Phoenix+ Start-up Awards

In an inspiring display of creativity and ambition, Coventry University hosted the Phoenix+ Start-up Awards 2025 Pitching Final, offering students and graduates the opportunity to present their innovative business ideas to a panel of distinguished judges. With a total funding pool of £15,000, generously supported by Santander Universities UK, the event promised not just financial backing, but also valuable exposure and mentoring for aspiring entrepreneurs.

A Showcase of Innovation

The atmosphere buzzing with excitement, seven finalists took the stage to showcase their diverse range of entrepreneurial ventures. Each pitch was met with enthusiasm and curiosity from both the judges and a live audience. Among the standout ideas was an AI-powered recovery assistant aimed at supporting stroke survivors, illustrating the intersection of technology and healthcare in addressing real-world challenges.

Another compelling pitch was for an emergency preparedness kit designed for families facing crises such as natural disasters. This idea resonated deeply, highlighting the need for accessible resources in uncertain times. Additionally, the reusable geotextile presented for cleaning up oil spills stood out, showcasing sustainability and environmental awareness in entrepreneurship.

Other noteworthy pitches included a mental health support and mentoring service for young people, a videography and photography business that aims to empower underrepresented creatives and communities, and an augmented reality brochure designed to enrich museum experiences with interactive 3D models, animations, and audio.

Celebrating Success: MetaTray’s Triumph

Among the remarkable pitches, MetaTray—an AI-powered, offline document and object scanner—stood out, securing the largest investment of the day. Bix Pettus, the first-year Aerospace Engineering student behind the innovative concept, left the event with a £5,000 boost towards realizing his vision. Bix expressed his gratitude, saying, “This prize will help me make my dream become a reality. I’m a student, so being able to get this money, instead of having to attract investors over a long period of time, gives me a great chance to make progress quickly.”

Bix’s experiences during the pitch showcased how rewarding it can be to share your passion. “I found the experience of doing the pitch really rewarding. I did my presentation and then answered questions; I think the judges were really impressed as they gave me a perfect score,” he reflected proudly.
